Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowships

At Yale, we are committed to excellence in fellowship training to prepare the next generation of leaders in gastroenterology and hepatology to conduct research, educate the next generation of learners, and provide compassionate, evidence-based care for patients with a wide range of digestive diseases.

We design our programs to help our fellows achieve their individualized professional goals with fulfilling careers in education, clinical care, and clinical or translational research. Recent trainees have gone on to highly successful careers in both academic medicine and practice.

As a fellow at Yale, you will train at one of the country's largest hospitals and most prestigious medical schools. Yale has a long and notable history of dedication to academic gastroenterology and hepatology and has remained at the forefront of innovations in endoscopy, medical care, and research encompassing a broad array of diseases.

Our fellows have the opportunity to work closely with internationally recognized faculty members in all disciplines within gastroenterology and hepatology. These leaders in the field will guide your research and clinical work and help support your career development.

What training will I receive through the Yale fellowships in gastroenterology and hepatology?

As a fellow, you will train at Yale New Haven Hospital, a 1,541-bed facility over two sites in New Haven, the York Street Campus, and the Saint Raphael Campus, and the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven. Fellows will also have an opportunity to train at the Yale Liver Center, only a handful of hepatology-focused research centers sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. We see patients from a demographically diverse population in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

You will care for patients with both common and rare GI and liver disorders. Focus areas include:

  • Complex liver disorders, including autoimmune and cholestatic liver disease
  • Steatotic liver disease
  • GI and pancreatic cancer prevention
  • Weight management and metabolic disorders
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Pancreatic diseases

You will also work closely with a research mentor on an original investigative research project in basic science, clinical research, or translational research. Our faculty are committed to the highest level of research training and work closely with you to make sure you have access to the guidance and resources you need to complete your research.
